History timeline

  • 1948 – Completed in May (1 paved runway/3000’).
  • 1955 – Installed runway lights and Beacon light.
  • 1957 – Created Oak Crest Park on the westside of the airport. Donated to City in 1967, and later renamed “Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park.” 
  • 1978 – Extended Runway to 3800’ (Federal Funded).
  • 1992 – Constructed taxiway and extended Runway to 4600’.
  • 1994 – Expanded the North Ramp/taxiway.
  • 1995 – Gillespie County hired a full-time Airport Manager.
  • 1999 – Created the Business Park and designated it as non-aeronautical.
  • 2002 – Extended Runway to 5001’ and constructed a parallel Taxiway; installed a new aerodrome beacon; constructed Terminal building and terminal apron.
  • 2011 – Resurfaced Runway, taxiway, and ramps.
  • 2012 – Constructed the Helipad; Installed LED runway lights (first in TX).
  • 2015 – Donated 5 acres in the Business park to Tx Forest Service for their region headquarters.
  • 2017 – Constructed Tx A&M Forest Service Ramp; Constructed north “Coffee Mug” Taxiway; Renovated the drainage flume on north ramp.
  • 2018 – Purchased 10 acres of land from the City.
  • 2020 – County built an AgriLife Facility in the Business Park
  • 2023 – Extended the North Apron
