County Justice of the Peace Precinct 1

The Office of the Justice of the Peace, Precinct One, was established by the Texas Constitution. The Justice presides over Class C Misdemeanor criminal cases, including—but not limited to—violations under the Traffic Code, Penal Code, Health and Safety Code, Education Code, Parks and Wildlife Code, and Alcoholic Beverage Code.

The Court also hears Civil and Small Claims cases with a jurisdictional limit of $20,000, and oversees various administrative matters such as driver license suspension appeals, magistration, and search warrants.

The Judge and Court Clerk are prohibited from giving legal advice.
Additionally, the Judge may not communicate with litigants outside of official court proceedings. Any attempt to contact the Judge directly regarding a pending case is considered ex parte communication and may result in serious consequences.


Enter a Plea (Make an Appearance)

If you have received a citation in Precinct One, you are required to submit a written plea to the charge(s) listed no later than the “on or before” date indicated on your citation.

To enter your plea, please complete the Plea Form (PDF) and mail, email, or deliver it in person to the Court by your appearance date.

Payments by cash, money order, or cashier’s check may be made in person during regular business hours. Payments by credit or debit card may be made online by clicking this link and using your citation number or TX Driver's License number.

Before making a payment, please verify that you are paying the correct court. Payments made to the wrong court will require processing a refund by check, which may cause delays.

Autopsies & Records Requests

To request copies of autopsy reports, or other records contact the court in writing for information on obtaining the records, or submit the Public Records Request Form to faster facilitate your request.

Please Note: 1) Autopsy records must be picked up in person; and 2) Criminal and Civil records requests can be completed through email and/or USPS mail.

Once completed, the Public Records Request Form may be emailed to JP1Office@gillespiecounty.gov or mailed to 125 W Main Street, Lower Level, Fredericksburg, TX. 78624.
